Actress/singer Zooey Deschanel had a birthday to remember on Tuesday (January 17) – U.S. President Barack Obama mailed the actress a personalised letter, wishing her “good health and happiness in the year ahead”. The Elf star was celebrating her 32nd birthday on Tuesday when she received an unexpected surprise in the mail box. Taking to her Twitter.com account to post a snap of the document, it reads, “Michelle and I send our warmest wishes for a happy birthday. As you celebrate this special occasion with your family and friends, please know I am grateful for all you have done to encourage and support young women who are making a difference across our country. “I hope your day is filled with love and laughter, and I wish you all the best for good health and happiness in the year ahead.” Deschanel, who shares her birthday with the American leader’s wife, Michelle Obama, later poked fun at the politician for skipping out on her party, writing, “It’s okay. I get it. I would go to Michelle Obama’s birthday instead of mine, too.”

She said: “Girls spit in my face.People were so mean to me. I’d cry every day”. The New Girl star hoped her situation would improve when she began studying at Northwestern University but still struggled to fit in with her classmates at the New York educational establishment. She added to Allure magazine: “I went to Northwestern because I had gone to a really non-traditional high school. I was like, ‘It’d be cool to have a traditional college experience. “Then I was like, ‘Oh, but none of these people understand what’s cool about me. My specialness is not appreciated in this place”. Zooey has carved out a successful acting career thanks to roles in movies such as ‘(500) Days of Summer’ but is currently appearing in new sitcom ‘New Girl’, and is amused that the show has seen her branded an ‘It’ girl. She said: “‘It’ girl is supposed to be something that only lasts a certain amount of time. “They keep calling me an ‘It’ girl, and at this point it makes me laugh, because they’ve done that so many times: ‘You’re it’; ‘you’re not it.’ What is ‘it’?”

Zooey Deschanel is too scared to babysit her nephew on her own. The New Girl actress’ sister Emily recently gave birth to a baby boy and while Zooey is completely smitten with him, she isn’t confident enough to have him on her own. She said: I’ll babysit him if somebody else is around! I’m not great at babysitting. I kind of don’t know what to do. If my mum’s around or something, you know. but I like holding him. He’s my sister’s first, and I only have one sister. He’s really cute. He’s adorable!” Zooey also says she is looking forward to Bones actress Emily returning to work so she can see more of her and her nephew. She said: “She visited my trailer a couple of times before she left. She actually finished work on Monday and then had the baby the next day, so she really worked right up to the end. But I’m looking forward to her coming back to work so that we can hang out more and I can hang out with my nephew.”
